Short tutorial on How To Make Deionized Water (DI Water)?
Deionized water is referred to as DI water, DIW or de-ionized water. It is water which has no minerals in it. In simple, it is a water in which all of its ions are removed. The water which has no ions is in its purest form. The di water becomes a blank slate after the ions are removed. The DI water can take on the characteristics of any solution or chemical compound that is added to it.
To make deionized water, all the charged ions found in tap water are exchanged for hydrogen and hydroxyl ions. Deionization is a typical industrial chemical process that uses specially manufactured ion-exchange resins for the exchange of hydrogen and hydroxide ions for dissolved minerals, and then recombine to form water.
Deionization of water does not significantly remove uncharged organic molecules, viruses or bacteria from the water, except by incidental trapping in the resin.
Note: Deionization of water can be done continuously and inexpensively using electrodeionization.
