In Electrical Engineering, Mutual Inductance between the two coils is defined as the property of the coil due to which it opposes the change of current in the other coil. Mutual Inductance is the basic operating principal of the transformer,
motors, generators and any other electrical component that interacts
with another magnetic field. It is the
current flowing in one coil that induces a voltage in an adjacent coil. It is denoted by M. In this short tutorial, let us discuss how to calculate mutual inductance between two coils given a neat example.
Mutual Inductance Formula:
M = k √L1L2
Where,
M - Mutual Inductance
L1 and L2 are the Self-Inductance
k is the coefficient of coupling,

Example : Consider that the self inductance L1 and L2 are given as 70mH and 50mH and the coefficient of coupling is 0.75. Calculate Mutual Inductance between coils.
Step 1: Given
L1 = 70mH
L2 = 50mH
k = 0.75
Step 2: Applying the values in the formula,
M = 0.75 √70 x 50
M = 44.37mH
