How To Calculate Kilovolt Ampere (kVA) Rating of a Single Phase Transformer?
kVA is simply kilovolt amps. It is a unit of apparent power, which is electrical power unit. 1 kilo-volt-ampere is equal to 1000 volt-ampere: 1kVA = 1000VA. Whereas, the volt is electrical pressure and an amp is electrical current.
This is a short tutorial that explains you on how to calculate kVA rating of single phase transformer.
Formula Used:
kVA Rating of Single Phase Transformer = (V x I) / 1000
Where,V = Voltage
I = Current.
Let us consider a load voltage of 480 volts and load current of 80 amps, determine the kVA rating of the single phase transformer.
Step 1: Given,
Load Voltage V = 480 volts
Load Current I = 80 amps.
Step 2: Applying the values in the formula,
kVA Rating of Single Phase Transformer = (V x I) / 1000
= (480 x 80) / 1000
= 38400 / 1000
= 38.4
