## Calculate Inpatient Bed Occupancy Rate in Hospital

In this short tutorial let us discuss on how to calculate bed occupancy rate using BOR(%) formula. The Bed occupancy rate (BOR%) is a measure of utilization of the available bed capacity in a hospital. It indicates the percentage of beds occupied by patients in a defined period of time, usually a year. BOR is expressed as a percent and other terms which are often used include "percent occupancy," "percentage of occupancy," or "occupancy ratio." The Bed occupancy rate (BOR%) is calculated as the number of beds effectively occupied by a patient for curative care divided by the number of beds available for curative care in the hospital multiplied by 365 days (defined period of time), with the ratio multiplied by 100.

BOR Formula:
Bed Occupancy Rate (BOR%) = (
Total number of inpatient days for a given period / Available beds x Number of days in the period) x 100 Example: In 2001 4000 inpatients days were served in a hospital with 150 beds . Calculate inpatient bed occupancy rate in hospital.
Step 1: Given,
Total number of inpatient days = 4000
Available beds = 150
2001 year has 365 days and hence period is = 365 Step 2: Applying the values in the formula,
Bed Occupancy Rate (BOR%) = (Total number of inpatient days for a given period / Available beds x Number of days in the period) x 100
BOR% = [4000 / (150 x 365)]
x 100
BOR% = 7.3% You can use this online Inpatient Bed Occupancy Rate Calculator to check for the answers.
