How To Calculate Education Index (EI)
What is Education Index?
Education plays a vital role in the development of humans. It helps in developing the knowledge, skills and competencies to survive and participate in the society and in the countrys economy. Education Index (EI) is published in the context of the Human Development Report (HDR), and it is one of the three components of the Human Development Index (HDI).
Education Index (EI) is calculated as the simple geometric average of two indicators: Mean Years of Schooling Index (MYSI) and the Expected Years of Schooling Index (EYSI).
Mean Years of Schooling (MYS) is the average number of completed years
of education of a population [25 years and older]. MYS is
indexed by dividing by 15, which is the projected maximum indicator for 2025.
Expected Years of Schooling (EYS) is the number of years a child spend in a given level of education. EYS is indexed by dividing by 18, which is equivalent to achieving a masters degree
in most of the countries.
In this short tutorial we will discuss on how to calculate the Education Index (EI) from the indexes of mean years of schooling and expected years of schooling in a simple step-by-step procedure explained with a neat example using pictures.
Formula Used:
EI = (MYSI + EYSI / 2)
MYSI = MYS / 15
EYSI = EYS / 18
Where,
EI - Education Index
MYSI - Mean Years of Schooling Index
EYSI - Expected Years of Schooling Index
Consider an example, where the expected year of schooling is given as 23 years and mean years of schooling is 25 years. Calculate the Education Index (EI).
Step 1: Given,
MYS = 25 years
EYS = 23 years
Step 2: Calculate MYSI,
Applying the values in the formula,
MYSI = MYS / 15
MYSI = 25 / 15
MYSI = 1.66
Step 3: Calcuate EYSI,
Applying the values in the formula,
EYSI = EYS / 18
EYSI = 23 / 18
EYSI = 1.27
Step 4: Calculate EI,
Applying the values in the formula,
EI = (MYSI + EYSI / 2)
EI = (1.66 + 1.27 / 2)
EI = (2.93 / 2)
EI = 1.465
